utah county shopping guide: part I

Kelsey, a Square Magazine reader, e-mailed me expressing concern about her upcoming move from Southern California to Utah County in August. She will be attending a University here and is wary because she's heard Utah County shopping isn't up to the same standard as her hometown.

I will admit that although Utah County shopping is not as diverse and varied as Southern California, it's really not half bad... you just gotta know where to look.

It is so not half bad that I am going to split up this shopping guide into parts, starting with Provo's University Avenue.

University Avenue (I fondly refer to it as the Miracle Mile)has the best local boutiques sprinkled along its stretch of road.

Soel Boutique:
Located at Riverwoods Mall near Provo Canyon you will find clothes for men and women. Expect brands like Frye, Diesel, Ben Sherman, Ella Moss and Free People to name a few.

Flower Basket Boutique:
Once a quaint floral shop, they recently upgraded to apparel for women and children. They have brands like Toms, Nick + Mo, Echo apparel and great home decor.

Coal Umbrella:
Provo's finest (and only) vintage shop. If digging through D.I. and Savers isn't your cup of tea, Coal Umbrella offers the finest selection of vintage and remade clothing as well as accessories and vinyl records.

Mode Boutique:
Just under Coal Umbrella you will find a collection of up and coming and lesser known brands at Mode Boutique. Apparel for men and women with brands like Modern Amusement, Nudie, Cheap Monday and hard to find shoes like Zuriick. If you're feeling creative they also have a t-shirt bar where you can make your own silk screened masterpiece.

Stay tuned for part II.
