Winter weather is just around the corner and in Utah things can get pretty chilly. For those of you newcomers who like warm weather, here are a few tips to help you stay just that way...warm.
Skin Care:
Sunscreen is a must! Whether you’re skiing or just walking to class, skin becomes more sensitive in the winter because of the cold dry air.
Lip balm/Chap Stick. Its usually best to get one that has a low SPF. Lips are no fun when they are cracked and sunburned. Lotion! Lotion! Lotion! Keeping skin dry will also help protect against the cold. Hands should be moisturized regularly in order to avoid hang nails and cracking knuckles.
Keeping warm:
The most necessary items are: gloves, hat, scarf, warm socks. Most of your body heat is released through your head, hands and feet, so keeping them covered will help you stay warm.
Layer! Layering clothes in the winter is a good way to keep warm in different conditions. Since most students will be walking to and from class, they’ll need to be comfortable in the classroom as well as outside. The best things to wear are a long sleeve shirt, a warm sweater and a warm coat.
Running/tennis shoes are BIG NO NO! When the snow is falling hard or there is still snow on the ground, shoes with lots of canvas and mesh get wet more easily, making the walk to class a big squishy bummer. It’s best to wear leather shoes or boots. Even leather heels are better than being wet and cold.
Keep a pair of small gloves in the glove compartment of your car. Some times temperatures can drop quickly especially at night. Waiting for the heater to warm up your steering wheel before you drive can be a waste of time easily avoided.
Staying healthy:
Make sure you get lots of sleep, fluids, exercise and foods rich in essential vitamins and minerals. This is a key part to preparing for the winter months. As students we can’t afford to get sick, so keeping your body in tip-top shape will help you avoid days stuck in bed with your kleenex box.
