D.I. and Savers are filled with secondhand threads in need of a new home...a fresh new look. And all for a fistful of change.
LAYER IT
Nothing is more ‘in’ this season than layering. However, the more layers you wear, the more expensive the outfit becomes. Problem solved. Thrift stores can provide you with Tees in vibrant colors for layering, to sharpen your fashion-forward edge. Layering is a college student’s best friend. Holes your roommate left in your shirt and stains your make-shift wash job didn’t remove can be hidden easily by simply adding a layer. Whether you are layering to only show a second collar or combining short and long-sleeved Tees, the more layers, the merrier the outfit.
CUT IT
Pant-waist size is perfect, but the length is way off. Whether your pants are too long or too short, feel free to cut this bargain wardrobe staple to meet the length of your choice. Complete the look by fraying the edges. Also, give the sweater vest a run for it’s money by creating one out of your basic tee. Cut the sleeves off and wear over collared shirts and long-sleeve tees.
DESTROY IT
Sorry if we sound like your mother but why buy designer jeans that are torn, bleached, and splattered with paint when you can make your own. Mom’s right. Save a few bucks and do some household chores in a pair of second hand jeans. The best is to just go to town with a cheese grater, a paint brush and and a bottle of bleach.
JEWEL IT
Nothing finishes off an outfit like a little glam. Broaches and jewels can add a vintage, gaudy, or hip touch to any outfit currently in your closet. Layering assorted pins can give your outfit the edge it needs, while still keeping a little lunch money in your wallet.
TIE IT
Who knew the neck tie had so many uses? On any given day, neck ties can be used as a belt, a headband, or as a makeshift pocket square for your blazer. Feel free to use your imagination with this one. For example, the neck tie is used as a belt tied through the belt loops; however, you can switch things up by just tying the tie outside the belt loops around your waist.
