Craig Robison

Age: 25 Hometown: Las Vegas, NV

The framed pictures of giraffes and gorillas hanging on Craig Robison’s walls look as though they came straight from the cover of a National Geographic safari issue. In actuality, they were taken by Craig himself, only a few feet away, during his own safaris. The past two summers, Craig has spent weeks in the countries south of the Sahara. The majority of his time has been dedicated to diagnosing pregnant women with HIV, traveling from city to city. Last summer was spent in Ghana, and the summer just gone had Craig’s home in Tanzania.
His time in Africa opened up his eyes to the world around him. The 25 year-old physiology and developmental psychology major from Las Vegas was able to better help those who are in need of help. “It’s not that they don’t have the knowledge. There are plenty of educated people in Africa,” Craig said. “What they are lacking is the resources, especially the money to finance the medical care that they need.”
Craig mentioned that one of the hardest things for him to swallow was that millions of children, not to mention adults, contract malaria every year, and of those millions, about one fifth die. The tragedy is that malaria is completely preventable and curable, but without the resources, many nations are falling victim to avoidable maladies.
“I just feel like I should help,” Craig said. Although his plans are to go onto medical school, his focus for now is to help others. With a minor in African studies, the vast continent has captured more than a zebra on his wall for Craig. His passion is giving those who need help the aid they seek.
