Come Clean

By Camilla Hodge

While the adolescent years may be far behind you, acne may still be in your company. Because everyone’s skin is different, there isn’t a cure-all for acne. But with a little research and some professional tips, you can easily customize a plan that will help prevent acne breakouts. Here are some ways:

Stay healthy. Get your beauty sleep, stay hydrated, eat a well-balanced diet, and appropriately manage stress.

There’s no place like home to start preventing unwanted acne. Cater your treatment to your skin type (oily, dry, or combination). In general, look for products with 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide or greater; sulfur; resorcinol lotions; or salicylic acid. Avoid any comedogenic products—found in some makeup—which can cause breakouts.

Seek professional help. For serious acne control, visit with a dermatologist or try other professional treatments a few months before your wedding date. Why so early? Some treatments may take months to kick in, while others will actually bring more impurities to the surface before your skin starts to clear. If you head to a spa, find one with a master aesthetician who specializes in customized skin care.

Best results will come from a combination of these tips. Consult skin care professionals to make sure you’re getting the best treatment possible.
